Article on My Happy Merriage Movie :

Akumi Agitogi wrote “My Happy Marriage,” illustrated by Tsukiho Tsukioka, initially on Shōsetsuka ni Narō. Fujimi Shobo published the series under their Fujimi L Bunko imprint starting January 2019.

Rito Kohsaka illustrates the manga adaptation on Square Enix’s Gangan Online service since December 2018. Japan premiered the live-action film adaptation in March 2023. Kinema Citrus produced and aired an anime television series from July to September 2023. They’ve announced a second season.

Toho’s hit film, “My Happy Marriage,” directed by Ayuko Tsukahara, explores a historical romance fantasy in Japan. Released on March 17, 2023, the movie, based on Akumi Agitogi’s light novels, weaves a traumatic love story set in the Meiji period.

Against a backdrop of military intrigue and shifting alliances, the narrative unfolds themes of abuse, manipulation, and dark magic. The film skillfully combines a slow-burn sweet romance with a strong aesthetic of hard-edged wonder.

However, amidst tear-stained romantic success, the narrative occasionally suffers from the weight of extensive world-building.

Miyo Saimori faces mistreatment and defamation, marked as lacking mystical abilities by her stepmother. Engaged to Kiyoka Kudo, a tactical leader with pyrotechnic powers, she discovers his true character.

As mysterious forces undermine the government and military, chaos ensues, and a plague-like power transforms individuals. While Saimori’s family plots her misery, love blossoms amid citywide violence, shaping the future of the nation.

Director Tsukahara, known for TV work, has a film credit in Café Funiculi Funicula. My Happy Marriage, more ambitious, features period costumes and elaborate fantasy fight sequences.

Tsukahara, skilled in weepy elements, excels in complex world-building. Amidst the complicated plot, the relationship’s heart beats strong, with solid character moments and effective, if melodramatic, acting from the leads.

Fukuoka beauty queen Imada portrays Saimori with wide eyes and stuttering apologies, enduring mistreatment. Imada, seen in ads, proves her acting chops with genuine, teary scenes.

While her expression may feel repetitive initially, her gradual transformation into a strong, confident force is rewarding. Meguro, as ice king Kudo, navigates a nuanced role, initially portraying a chauvinistic control-freak but slowly revealing warmth.

His manly fight sequences and firework magic fights add depth. Initially worried about wooden acting, Hamada displays warmth through subtle expressions and charm.

balancing against harsh expectations. Some aspects of the premise, endorsing a Beauty and the Beast/Stockholm syndrome dynamic, may discomfort. Viewers might find the power imbalance and control of women in society distasteful.

Western fans may dislike Saimori’s passive, apologetic behavior towards Kudo. However, historical context likely influenced the narrative, and the film’s conclusion strengthens the protagonists’ relationship.

Ryoko Kobayashi, as stepsister Hana, is vicious and sabotages Saimori consistently. Oshiro Maeda, portraying Yoshito Godo, shows youthful zeal and range, excelling in camaraderie and tragic conflict

Keisuke Watanabe, as mysterious businessman Arata Tsuruki, brings a delightful sense of danger with a mischievous air. Transitioning between scenes, Watanabe’s character leaves us unsure of trust. His presence on screen is captivating and enigmatic.

The movie crams in numerous plot points, crosscurrent scheming, magic systems, and tragic backstories, causing drag

. Language barrier impedes understanding tapdancing under mystical CGI flowers and the villainous conspiracy’s inner workings. Even with comprehension, the plot feels overloaded.

Sundry details overshadow character development, making the dramatic rescue seem more like plot manipulation. These negatives are hard to address definitively until a subtitled version allows a clearer understanding.

Special effects and action are briskly handled, presenting magical encounters with majesty and sensitivity.

. While not Hollywood-level realism, bursts of flame and wind reflect characters’ internal turmoil.

The crackling energy and paper-cut slicing zephyrs may lack fidelity but carry emotional fervor.

The final confrontation, settled with “barely an inconvenience,” surpasses the dramatic impact of Shin Kamen Rider, which My Happy Marriage defeated at the box office.

Akiyuki Takeyama’s soundtrack lacked impactful epic orchestration or memorable melodies for emotional resonance.

. His toons felt generic, lacking character. The end-theme by Johnny’s group boy band Snow Man appears colorless and mild, serving as background noise rather than a cascade of catharsis.

The costumes, bombastic magic acts, love in the air, and fiery fight scenes twiddle heartstrings.

My Happy Marriage captures fantasy romance adventure better than Destiny: the Tale of Kamakura (2017). Despite an unwieldy plot, the film leaves a positive impact.

unlike the stony silence after Shin Kamen Rider. The partnership between magic and love forms a fulfilling union in the end.

  • Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to
my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to
her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and
it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back!
LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!
